How to Find Career Advice Worth Listening To - Workology

How to Find Career Advice Worth Listening To How to Find Career Advice Worth Listening To Recently, a friend came to me, asking for career advice. She was unhappy in her job and wanted my opinion on what to do. Should she express her frustration to her manager, look for another position or simply grin and bear it? I told her to talk to her boss to see if changes could be made to her job that would improve the situation and to start putting feelers out there in case things got worse. How to Find Career Advice Worth Listening To Her request also got me thinking. When you need career advice, how do you know the guidance you receive is worthwhile? Who’s to say the person you approach actually knows what they’re talking about? Here are some tips I think can help you make that determination â€" assuming you’re willing to take my advice, of course: Consider who’s been in your shoes before. Whenever possible, identify someone who has the experience or knowledge to back up their recommendations. Should you join that hot new startup or take a job with an established firm? Talk to a person who’s worked for both types of companies. It may take some effort to find the right person. That’s OK. Nothing says you have to limit your search to friends, family members or long-time acquaintances. Reach out to your network if you need help. Help them help you. In order to provide informed advice, the person you approach needs to understand the full situation. In my friend’s case, she talked about her long-term career goals, the type of work environment she preferred, her relationships with current coworkers and even the character traits of her boss. She was open and forthcoming, and it helped me offer useful opinions. Keep your emotions in check. You may not receive the advice you expected or hoped for. If that’s the case, don’t criticize your contact, become defensive or dismiss the person’s suggestions outright. Although you don’t have to act on the guidance you received, you should at least consider it. Step back if necessary so you can see things objectively. Get a second opinion. It never hurts to have more than one person weigh in. So, if you can, solicit feedback from multiple sources. You’re likely to receive a range of perspectives, which will help you be more confident in your ultimate decision. Take any advice with a grain of salt. Be cautious about blindly adhering to any advice you receive, no matter the source. That’s not to say anyone will purposely steer you in the wrong direction. But you are the only person intimately familiar with all the particulars of your situation â€" including your emotions and personality. The choice that someone else feels is best for you may not take every factor into account. Say thanks. Whether or not you found a contact’s advice useful, thank the person for taking the time to listen and weigh in. Even better: Follow up once the situation has been resolved and let them know their efforts helped. Offer to return the favor if they are ever in need of counsel. How do I Stand Out as an Intern Applicant With Minimal Experience CareerMetis.com

How would I Stand Out as an Intern Applicant With Minimal Experience â€" CareerMetis.com A couple of months back, an understudy applied to my office's temporary position program with negligible experience. She had recently completed her first year at school, and her resume didn't have the numerous extra-curricular exercises, different candidates did.Yet, I recruited her more than many understudies that had progressively strong resumes.evalHow did I realize she would have been probably the best assistant we had that summer? Here's the means by which: as it so happens, she exhibited her enthusiasm for the business and the temporary job position, communicated her longing to learn and extend her insight, and showed her energy for the opportunity. This showed me an important exercise how understudies with practically zero experience can hang out in the entry level position application process, and eventually increment their odds of getting an offer.Make starting effort countevalIt's evident from the main email that hits my inbox whether a candidate is truly inspired by the entr y level position. What numerous understudies don't understand is that each email they send is considering along with a chief's impression of them. The second you go after a job, you are as of now meeting. Candidates need to make sure:The email is customized, not a mass message disseminated to chiefs far and wide. While reordering email after email may spare you time in the application procedure, it is anything but a viable method to get entry level position directors to see you. Trust me, we can tell when an email is nonexclusive enough to have been sent to many companies! You notice something about the organization to exhibit you've done research. This is a tremendous method to get a supervisor's consideration and show that you're keen on the organization, not simply intrigued by any entry level position you can get. Take that additional moment to discover one significant goody about the organization, and fuse that into your underlying outreach. The tone is welcoming for future corres pondence. Tell the collector that you're excited about the entry level position by saying you'd be glad to respond to any inquiries they may have, give extra data if vital and that you anticipate got notification from them. The second you click send on that first email, the meeting has begun. So consistently make it count!Be forthright and honestA hardly any weeks after the assistant I referenced before applied to the temporary job opportunity, she sent the accompanying message:I simply needed to catch up on my application for your late spring entry level position opportunity and again express my enthusiasm for this position. I understand I don't have a lot of understanding yet I couldn't want anything more than to find out about this field and addition the abilities required for this industry.evalThe trustworthiness of her message stood apart among the other application messages I get all the time. While certainty is important in temporary position looking, on the off chance that yo u don't have as much experience, at times it attempts to inject a touch of humility. In expansion, the exertion of following up shows that she was still exceptionally inspired by the chance and really needed to talk about it. It was this subsequent message that roused me to plan a meeting with her.Follow upevalAs featured above, following up is one of the best approaches to stand apart as a temporary position candidate. Many don't have any desire to hear this, yet considering an administrator on the telephone subsequent to applying has an immense effect. This exhibits eagerness and responsibility to the chance and puts you route in front of the competition.Every understudy that has called me subsequent to applying to our temporary position program has gotten an offer. Regardless of whether you don't catch up by means of telephone call, make sureto follow up through email. Many entry level position supervisors get various application messages without a moment's delay, so your unique eff ort may have become mixed up in the blend. Following up is necessary!Highlight transferrable skillsWhile your resume may not be pressed with proficient temporary jobs, you despite everything have bounty to offer to an organization through yourtransferable skills.Scour the entry level position prerequisites and perceive how you can associate things you've just done to what the organization needs. Think about all your past occupations, class ventures, volunteer encounters, and any clubs you're a section of.For model: in case you're applying to an advertising temporary job, how might your position at the pizza shop connect?Transferable aptitudes include:the relational abilities you required when talking on the phone, customer administration when working with testing individuals, social media experience when your supervisor requested that you help with the pizza joint's Instagram, and the executives when you needed to prepare and regulate your replacement.Get imaginative with it!Once you g et your first entry level position or potentially do a couple of class ventures identified with your significant you'll have increasingly important experience to supplant summer employments at a pizza shop. Be that as it may, up to that point, attempt to distil any transferrable aptitudes you can from past experience.evalevalBe enthusiasticAll all through the application procedure, it's necessary to grandstand your energy. Experience on a resume is nothing without excitement for the work you'd be doing. As a temporary position director, I can get an application from the most qualified understudy with all the pertinent involvement with the world, however on the off chance that they're not energetic or anxious to make the most out of the chance, that past experience doesn't matter. The assistant in the model above was not the most experienced candidate I got, yet her extraordinary eagerness let me realize she'd set forth a great deal of exertion to make the most out of the entry level p osition. So ensure the recruiting supervisor realizes how truly intrigued you are to make the most out of the opportunity.Even if, after this exertion, you don't get the entry level position you were moving in the direction of, you have different choices. When the procedure is finished:evalAsk the recruiting director if there will be there anything you could do to be progressively serious to bosses later on. This shows you're anxious to learn and create as an applicant, and you esteem their feedback.Stay associated with the organization and people you worked with en route. Stay in contact with them, and offer updates about how you're taking their recommendation and getting more understanding. Is The Tone of Your Voice Holding Your Career Back

Is The Tone of Your Voice Holding Your Career Back Male centric society has consistently strived to strip ladies of our voices. In any case, as we make progress in the work environment and witness more ladies guarantee positions of authority, were no longer decided by simply what we state, yet additionally by how we state it. Top of the line women's activist creator Naomi Wolf filled a firestorm in July when she distributed an open letter to millennial ladies. Young ladies, surrender the vocal fry, and recover your solid female voice, she composed. What is vocal fry? Also, for what reason would we say we are approaching ladies to apologize for it? Referred to among phonetics as creaky voice, vocal fry is a particular sort of phonation brought about by loosening the vocal strings. In standard discourse, the vocal ropes vibrate to discharge a constant flow of air, however in vocal fry, the careless strings vibrate unpredictably and along these lines fold open and shut so the air is rather discharged in perceptible sprays. Observers have noticed the Kardashians, Britney Spears, and Zooey Deschanel for their notoriously creaky voices. However, while the two people the same utilize vocal fry, it's to a great extent ladies who are scrutinized unreasonably for it. Without a doubt, a recent report found that 66% of a little example of school ladies utilize vocal fry, and American youth consider it for all intents and purposes unimportant indeed, a recent report found that a main part of youngsters have a for the most part ideal impression of ladies who talk with creaky voices. Be that as it may, while the discourse obstruction doesnt appear to fluster them, it could really be harming womens work possibilities, as indicated by a later report distributed in the online diary PLOS. This investigation led by Duke University scientists Rindy C. Anderson, Casey A. Klofstad, William J. Mayew and Mohan Venkatachalam and upheld by an award from the National Science Foundation proposes that ladies who utilize vocal fry sound less skillful, less dependable, less taught and less recruit capable. Its another voice characteristic like sudden spike in demand for sentences, hoarseness, and uptalk, which is the propensity to weaken sentences with questions, that subvert womens authority. The analysts asked seven youngsters and seven young ladies to state the expression, Thank you for thinking about me for this chance, in both an ordinary tone and in vocal fry. At that point, 800 people of an assortment of ages were welcomed through an online review to tune in to the examples and select which speaker (typical or fry) they saw as progressively instructed, skillful, reliable, alluring and engaging as an occupation up-and-comer. For every characteristic, the audience members favored the ordinary voice to the fry voice, paying little heed to the speakers sexual orientations. The respondents were more averse to state theyd need to enlist the individual with the fry voice, especially on the grounds that they saw them as less dependable. They additionally favored a typical voice 86 percent of the ideal opportunity for female speakers and 83 percent of the ideal opportunity for male speakers when taking employing somebody into consideration.Likewise, ladies utilizing fry were seen more adversely than men utilizing vocal fry, and, by and large, negative recognitions were more grounded when the audience was a lady. Analysts presume that ladies might be lopsidedly punished for utilizing vocal fry just in light of the fact that they're required to, naturally, have higher voices. Indeed, in 2013 Slate noticed that more established men, who are commonly in power positions over young ladies, discover vocal fry strongly aggravating. SlateLexicon Valley podcaster (and NPROn the Mediahost) Bob Garfieldcomplained: Something happens to their voice, as though they have a catch in their throat. Through the span of the 26-minute web recording, Garfield depicts the discourse design as revolting, shocking, careless, irritating and truly irritating. I need the oil to quit searing, Garfield said. I need somebody to wave an enchantment wand over a noteworthy part of the American open [i.e. women] and have the singing reached a conclusion. For ladies, be that as it may, vocal fry is an incredible problem to reach a conclusion with it might be more difficult than one might expect on the grounds that it might really be an inner mind answer to the settled in comprehension of our other discourse quirks society would call deficiencies. An abundance of research proposes that people with more profound voices are seen as progressively predominant and are increasingly effective at acquiring positions of authority so maybe ladies drop their voices to throaty levels to show quality, certainty and in this manner competency. We live in a world in which were advised we ought to talk like men to excel, and afterward unfavorably prevented for doing only that. A recent report, The Myth of the Ideal Worker: Does Doing All the Right Things Really Get Women Ahead? distributed in Catalyst, found that self-promotion abilities really associate with working environment status and pay more straightforwardly than merit itself. In this way, talking great for oneself is a greater facilitator to faring admirably in the working environment than buckling down. For instance, science would bolster Hillary Clintons misfortune to Donald Trump in the presidential decisions, as observers constantly censured her voice. Specialists have dove into the subtleties behind her supposedly irritating voice and furthermore into the numerous ways her qualifications were undermined on account of her examples of discourse. Maybe, at that point, the discussion ought not be centered around discourse in any case, rather, statusnot who we permit to utilize vocal fry, yet rather who we permit to get power. - AnnaMarie Houlis is a media writer and an experience enthusiast with a sharp social interest and a liking for solo travel. Five ways to do better in phone interviews

Five ways to do better in phone interviews The last phone interview I did was for my job at the Boston Globe. And let me just confess that I wasnt that great in the interview, and I stressed a lot afterwards about not getting the job. But, of course, I did get the job, which I think might be evidence that I write so much about career advice that I am becoming way too hard on myself. At any rate, I have done tons of phone interviewson both sides of the hiring equationso when Sia asked me to write a post on how to do a phone interview, I was surprised that I hadnt written one already. (Although I have written a bunch about interviews.) So, here are five tips for doing well in a phone interview: 1. Attend to your surroundings. If you have an interview scheduled, take precautions beforehand to get in a good spot physically. Dont take the interview when you are at your desk and cant talk freely. Dont take the call when there is too much noise in the background. And dont walk from one place to another because the breathlessness that comes from walking and talking at the same time subconsciously conveys lack of authority to someone who doesnt know you. If you did not schedule it beforehand, feel free to ask the interviewer if you can call back at a better time. You will not sound disinterested, but rather, you will sound concerned for managing your life by organizing your commitments. 2. Dress for the part. Consider getting dressed up for your interview, even though no one will see you. The emails you write to a hiring manager are different than your emails to your friends. You cant talk to an interviewer the same way you talk with your friends. You know this, but the shift is difficult without practice. And if you are not practiced at talking about business on the phone, its hard to get into business mode for the call. A way to compensate for this is to dress for an interview even though the interviewer cant see you. In the 90s when people debated the virtues of dumping suits at the workplace in favor of business casual, there was a fair amount of research to show that people took their work more seriously when they were in a suit. That makes sense. Girls act more like a princess when theyre in a prom dress than when theyre in running shorts, and the same happens with people in work clothes. Im not saying you should wear a suit all the time. Im saying that when theres a risk of sounding too casual or unprofessional on the phone, dressing up a little can actually change how you sound. 3. Stand up. No kidding. Youll sound more self confident and dynamic if you stand while you speak than if you sit. Walking around a bit, but not too much, also keeps the call going smoothly. If your body is confined, your speech sounds different than if you have run of the room. Its one reason that the best speakers walk around instead of standing in one place at the podium. Using hand gestures is very natural for talking, so allow yourself to use them, even though youre on the phone. You dont have to force it. They will just come, as long as your hands are free. And you want to sound natural on the phone because authentic is more likeable. So walking around a room with a headset will actually give you the freedom to be more yourself on the call. 4. Prepare for the most obvious questions. A resume is to get someone to pay attention to you. An in-person interview is to see if people like you. Somewhere in between those two events, people need to make sure you are qualified and you dont have any huge red flags. So in a phone interview you can expect people to focus on those two concerns. You will probably get questions asking you to show that you actually have the skills to accomplish the goals for the open position. Be prepared to give organized, rehearsed examples of how you have performed at work in the past in order to show your skill set. Also, be ready for a question about the most obvious problem on your resumeoften frequent job changes or big gaps in work. These are answers you should practice. Even if your answer isnt great, a good delivery can make the difference between getting through a phone screen or not. 5. Dont forget to close. An interview is about selling yourself, and the best salespeople are closers. Your goal for a phone interview is to get an in-person interview. So dont get off the phone until you have made some efforts to get to that step. Ask what the process is for deciding who to interview face-to-face. Ask for decision-making timelines, and try to find out who is making the decisions. Dont barrage the interviewer with questions in this regard, but the more information you have, the more able you will be to get yourself to the next step. And dont forget a key component of a successful closeeven for a phone interviewis a thank you note to followup. Finally, after you get done with a phone interview, send out a few more resumes, or go fill out a few more job applications. Hopefully, you wont need to keep hunting because the phone interview will clinch the job. But it will make you crazy to just sit and wait for the interviewer to take action. If you keep job hunting you are taking action yourself which will make you feel more in control over your situation. The best way to ace an interview is to be interviewing for your dream job. Its so easy to sell yourself when you are a perfect fit for a job youre dying to have. But its really hard to identify what that dream job is. And then, of course, you need a path to get to that job. Heres a course helps you identify the best job for you and shows you how to get it: Get Your Dream Job Now!

Advance Your Career in 2014 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Advance Your Career in 2014 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As the year winds down, many people are busy reflecting on 2013 and setting goals for 2014. The New Year is a great time for a fresh start even in an old career. Whether you’re looking for the ideal job or just want to get out of a job rut, planning and putting your focus in the right areas is crucial for success. If you want to advance your career in 2014, here are three areas you should focus on. Reassess your career goals Before setting 2014 goals, review your 2013 goals and your progress toward achieving them. Once you take stock of what you’ve already achieved, you can decide where you want to go and if your current goals will get you there. If you fell short of your goals in 2013, you can pick up where you left off in 2014 or maybe you want to abandon that goal for a new one. Perhaps a raise isn’t enough and you’d rather have a promotion. If you met your goals in 2013, it’s time to make new ones. Not all goals have to be around income or position. You can have goals around your personal achievements, receiving recognition, improving skill sets and other job-related areas. Expand your network Networking is one of the best ways to connect with resources that can help you improve your career prospects. In expanding your network, focus on quality connections over quantity. Connect with influencers, teachers and others that can lead you to resources that will help you achieve your career goals. But remember, networking isn’t just about you and your career. It’s also about how you can help others. As you seek new connections, share how you can bring value to them. Not only does this help others reach their goals, but also, they’re more likely to help you after having a positive experience with you. Expand your knowledge and experience It is said that knowledge is power. When it comes to advancing your career, the more you know about your industry, company, job duties and those you work with, the more you can use that knowledge to expand your career. Use your knowledge to be the best employee you can be and provide the best service you can to your employer. Reading books, attending trainings, seminars and conferences, and finding mentors are great ways to increase your knowledge. You can expand your experience by searching for opportunities to use your knowledge in the workplace. Achieving career advancement goes beyond having the skills to do the job and showing up at work every day. Strive to be the best employee in your position by setting goals, seek out quality people to connect with and take advantage of opportunities to learn and do more. These efforts will not only increase your value at your current job, but also make you marketable should you decide to pursue a new job.
